Kirsty Hume by Patrick Demarchelier - Harper’s Bazaar (US), December 1997
‘‘ In 1997, Scottish model Kirsty Hume married actor, model, and documentary filmmaker Donovan Leitch at Luss Parish Church on the banks of Loch Lomond in Scotland in 1997 after meeting at a nightclub. Hume wore an ivory satin brocade gown by Arkivestry and a coronet headpiece of amethyst, and her five attendants dressed in period-style dresses in lavender, the color of the local heaths. The groom wore a tartan kilt. (…)
The ethereal look reflected the late 1990s trend toward romantic minimalism, but with a distinct nod to medieval aesthetics—flowing sleeves, delicate embroidery, and a veil reminiscent of Renaissance art. This style marked a turning point in bridal fashion, blending historical influence with modern high fashion sensibility. Kirsty’s medieval bridal look quickly became a cultural reference point for bridal editorials and alternative wedding inspirations throughout the early 2000s. (…)
The gown itself echoed 12th–15th-century European silhouettes often seen in royal portraits and illuminated manuscripts. Fashion historians point to this fusion of historical couture with contemporary bridalwear as one of the most influential visual statements of the late 20th century. Kirsty’s look remains timeless—a symbol of elegance, individuality, and runway-to-real-life storytelling. ‘‘
