Modern Mythologies: Veruschka and the Triumph of Galatea

The Dolce & Gabbana S/S 1990 collection was inspired by classical mythology and Sicilian maritime folklore. The featured scarf showcases a graphic reproduction of The Triumph of Galatea, a 1512 Renaissance fresco by Italian master painter Raffaello.

Galatea is a Sicilian sea nymph who famously transformed her slain lover, the shepherd Acis, into an immortal river spirit near Mount Etna. Raffaello’s composition captures her joyful apotheosis, riding triumphantly across the waves in a dolphin-drawn chariot. While the original masterpiece is on display in Rome’s Villa Farnesina, Dolce & Gabbana’s S/S 1990s advertising campaign, shot by Steven Meisel, documents its 20th-century translation into a luxury Italian accessory.
